Why don't most people bother to install ceiling fans properly?
I've noticed that most people think that you can just simply install a ceiling fan to an existing fixture box and expect it to work, and more importantly, be safe. They seldom replace the ceiling box with one designed to support fans, and they leave the existing 14 2 cable powered by a single switch. If wired this way, then the switch controls the whole unit, and pull chains must be used. If the box isn't changed, then the fan will be too heavy for it, and it can literally pull the box down out of the ceiling with the wiring.A properly installed fan will have a fan rated ceiling box and be wired with 14 3 cable from a wall switch containing separate light and fan controls, so pull chains will never need to be used.

Having a problem installing ceiling fan.?
Okay, I'll try to make this as clear as possible.Bought a new ceiling fan w lights for a room.Took out the old one also had lights just to be clear .When I was taking it out I noticed it looked pretty normal, white on white black on black... So I wasn't worried.Well, I noticed there were four wires in the ceiling box not including ground I only have 3 on the fan I'm installing. So I looked on the back of the fan I took out and there are 4 wires, two whites, a black and a blue. The one we bought only has a white, a black and a blue wire. ground but I'm excluding them Also, we have two switches which one controls the fan and the other controls the lights. I believe this is what makes it confusing . Okay so I hooked it up just like the other fan was at least how I saw it .Turned it on and the lights didn't work, but the fan did.So now I'm confused.Okay, so I guess I have the fan hooked up correctly, it works fine at my 2 switch. But the lights are still giving me problems. I have a white, black and two unmarked older wires that are alike. One of which has current running through it. I checked by hooking the blue wire up to it, both the lights and the fan turned on... But that's not what I want. I also found it weird when I go through the fan cycles high med low off it turns the lights off with it when I get to off which it shouldn't .
How is it that people don't get shocked when they are installing ceiling fans?
Are the wires they are working with live? If not, is it because they have flipped the light switch off? Or, do they have to go down in the basement and turn of the circut on the fuse box?
Installing ceiling fan, 4 wires?

Just installed ceiling fan. Why would it not work with the ground wires attached?
I installed a ceiling fan light in a room that only had a light. The house is only five years old. I first attached both ground wires running from the fixture to the bare ground wire coming out of the electrical box. Every time I turned the breaker back on, and tried to turn on the light or fan, it would spark, and trip the breaker. So after reseting the breaker many times and messing with the wires, I tried turning it on without the ground wires attached and the fan light worked perfectly. I just want to make sure this is safe and was wondering if anyone can explain the problem I'm having.
Installing ceiling fan in 100+ yr old house?
Hi,I have a couple ceiling fixtures I was hoping to replace in a very old home with a plaster ceiling. When I removed the old fixtures, I found the ceiling boxes are old black metal boxes with three pairs of cloth covered wires coming out. There is a threaded metal pipe running out from the center of the box. The previous fixture hung from the pipe, usually with a 1 2" cover between the base of the light fixture and the ceiling. Inside the cover were brackets, the pipe ran through the bracket, and a nut held the brackets. I'm assuming the pipe is an old gas pipe. I believe the cloth covered wire was just never replaced in certain parts of the walls but it was in other parts . Ignoring the wiring for now, any idea how I can hang a fixture or fan with that pipe in the way?
Installed ceiling fan but keeps tripping the breaker?
I've switched out all my ceiling fans and lights and lights with no problem, they are all one one breaker. But when i tried to put two different fans in my room it sparks and the breaker trips. Do i need to call an electrician to fix the wiring, everything else works perfect?
