Would a hackamore help?
My sisters horse who we have only recently bought is a 16hh, 14yo gelding. Very lovely sweet warmblood, but when we got him home, he started throwing his head around when in trot and canter, and so we got his saddle checked, fine. And then as nothing improved he went to our instructor who is a specialist in horse behaviour. And to use her words 'His mouth is like rock', he's been shoved into such harsh unnecessary bits that now he won't accept any bits.. And so i wondered if a bitless or a hackamore would help? But seeing as i don't know anything about hackamores or bitless bridles.. any advice?Sorry, yes he has had his teeth checked they are fine, as is his back, he is in pretty much 100 % apart from the mouth. And if you'd read the question he is WITH our instructor who is ALSO a specialist in horse behaviour. He is currently in a snaffle and she has said that he cannot just be schooled to get it any better, he's 'too far gone' the only thing we could do would be to shove another harsh bit and a martingale on him to get it any better.. and i don't know about you but i don't think thats right. So we are looking for other ways

Bucking w/ hackamore?
My last few drill practices has been interesting to say the least..anyway my last included me falling for the second time, which was kind of amusing since we had a foot of snow.Anyway, I was riding Lady and asked for the canter which she instead decided to throw her head to the ground and cow hop & buck. About three bucks later her head basically, for lack of better words, pulled me off. While I plan to ride her in a normal bridle next time and carrying a crop I had her in a hackamore and noticed I have a LOT of problem trying to get her head up. It was completely ill effective trying to get her head up with it. So, how do you get a horses head up in a hackamore? Without hurting the horse I should add. Or is it even something plausible? I did hop back up and rode her for another half hour to complete drill it was a pretty fun over all. I was wearing all black and came up all white. She proceeded to give us all a heart attack by taking about three laps in a dead gallop around the ring with the reins down then she walked over to me and just stood there. Silly horse.Yeah that's what concerned me about the hackamore too. I'm going to be using a bridle w a bit next week, she normally does fine in a hackamore through. We know it was just energy. She's normally pretty much a push button lesson pony normally. We plan on letting all the horses run before drill because we had two bolts and rear that day too.Didn't think the bucking was fun speaking of drill. xP But thanks I didn't even think of pulling on rein.

What is the gentlest hackamore?
My horse tosses his head up when I ride him with a bit in his mouth. I found out he rides wonderfully with only a halter and reins. I have had five years of lessons and I would like to know the gentlest hackamore there is?

Advice on teaching a horse to neck rein in a hackamore?
I have a 13 year old APHA mare who I ride in hackamore. She is broke to the bit but extremely nervous and tense and is much more calm and focused in the hackamore. We do not compete, just trail ride and enjoy each other. She is not neck reined, and I would like to start teaching her but I cannot find any information on neck reining hackamore horses.Just wanted to hear from some people who ride their horses in hackamores and have neck reined them. thanks so much.

Snaffle bit to a natural horsemanship bridle or a bosal hackamore?
so i just use a snaffle for my horse, but i think he is to the point where i am wanting to maybe switch to a natural horseman ship or a bosal hackamore. it is just an idea. no clue if i should or shouldnt or can or cant. just a thought. any input helps. just please be polite

Where can I get some cheap hackamore's for my horsey?
Well the other day I rode my boy with a hackamore and found out he LOVES hackamores, so then the next day I rode him with a bridle again, and noticed he listens much much much better with a hackamore, so i decided to use hackamores from now on to make my boy happy, so I know I can get some from my tack store, but they are the really fancy kinds, im going for a cheaper one, western, and no clip on hackamore, or attachments, can anyone give me a website where I can get some cheap ones? And also my other question was, does he like it more because there isnt as much pressure in his mouth? Why does he respond so much better to a hackamore bit less bridle

Where can I buy a good side-pull training hackamore with a rawhide noseband?
I need one for my barrel mare. I'm gonna wrap the rawhide so don't call me mean for using it.

What kind of hackamore should I use?
So the horse i've been riding lately listens amazing to verbal commands. I was riding im in a rubber mouth d ring because at this moment it's the only soft bit I had that fit him. He likes the bit and it works on him but today I got brave lol. I was riding him bareback and I never touched my reins he listens so well to verbal commands. I decided to try him in just a halter and my clip on contesting reins and again he still listened amazing. This time there was even another horse in the arena and he still was amazing. I was thinking because he listened so well I could get rid of the bit all together and use a hackamore on him. A halter is great and all but for safety I would like a little bit of something there in case of a situation. Not because he might misbehave but because I have to share the arena with other riders. What type of hackamore do you suggest for a horse who is supper light in the mouth and listens so well to just voice and leg cues? Thanks Oh and the cheaper the better

Should I try a hackamore? ?
I have an 8 year old paint gelding, who was purchased at the auction this past June. I have no previous knowledge of his prior training but he's a pretty level headed guy who likes to please. He's very forward though and sometimes like to fight the bit. He fights it when he decides he wants to go faster or change gaits or when he doesn't want to stand it. It's not ALL the time he fights it, just on certain days when he's feeling " speedy" . He yanks on the bit to where I almost go flying over his neck and head Also on the trail I have to hold him back at times and he does the same thing. He's got alot of giddy up and go & fights the whoa He's been in a d ring snaffle for 3 months, then a thom thumb for a short while because the bit resisting increased, so he's back in his snaffle. A boarder at my barn suggested he has a very hard mouth and for me to try him in a hackamore. Should I? I'm concerned that he won't do any downward transitions or halt and stand at all.... And I won't be able to get him to stop. 1.What exactly is the purpose of a hackamore anyways? And do you think I should try him out in one or get my trainer to work some more on getting him on the bit?2. What about a bosal? Does it work the same way?By the way, he's healthy and his teeth are good and don't need to be floated. Thanks for the input

Getting a horse "on the bit" in a hackamore?
Is it possible to get a horse on the bit while riding in a hackamore? Obviously there isn't a bit, but can you achieve the same or a similar effect in a hackamore?

What kind of hackamore do you used on your barrel horse?
I'm looking to buy a new hackamore. The one I have now is way too big for my mare and it always falls low and I can't adjust my bridle any higher to fix it. Any ideas? Please don't give me any bits, I don't use them at all.I also barrel race, and I am going to be eventually buying a solid paint mare to finish her in barrels. If that helps..ThanksBliss If you didn't already see, I am asking about hackamores people use, not a long paragraph on your opinion. I don't use bits in my horse's mouth. I must be doing something right if I can control my mare in a hackamore and not use a bit. I bought my mare from a very rough and abusive home, they rode her in a gag bit, were very rough with her mouth. When she came to me, I tried a simple snaffle bit, she threw her head and constantly had her mouth open. She flat out HATED anything in her mouth after a gag bit. I've rode her in hackamores for the longest time now and she is WONDERFUL with them. I have total control, I get no head throwing, opening of the mouths, and to be honest, when using a hackamore in barrel racing, the horse has better balance around the barrel when turning with a hackamore on than a bit. I don't have a tough hand on my horses and I never have. I am also pretty sure if I am not going to be hurting my horse's nose bridge if I'm not yank

Would a hackamore be good on my problem gelding?
I have a quarter horse that used to be broke when he was younger. He hasn't been road in a long time and I am going to ride him. About a year ago my dad tried to ride him and I guess he threw a huge hissy fit and you know the ussual, hes a big boy and id rather work with him then against him. He is about 8 13 years old Im not sure. Hes reallly good built and good looking. I've had experience in riding horses like these but hes got a full brother thats now a saddle bronc horse and the bucking is in his blood, if he was to blow hed throw me for sure Id like to know some good gear for riding a horse like this and any other tips would really help. Thanks I asked this earlier about what type of bit, but I wanna use a hackamore. Plus i didnt get any tips on keeping him calm and riding him.

Should i use a Hackamore on my horse?
My horse is a registered Morgan gelding. Hes around 17, right now im using a Low Port Twisted Pretzel Bit. He is a very fast and strong horse. so i was wondering if using a hackamore is even a good idea. Also i want to do barrels, and jumps with him, would a hack be better for that? why or why not

High Quality Hackamore?
I'm looking for a very high quality english hackamore, like ones made from full grain leather, not belly leather. Any brands or custom made ones that you recommend? I've had a bad experience with 2 of them that broke. They weren't under any stress either. They just snapped.
